Crank Up the Heat: Breaking Free from Your Comfort Zone

I want to share a mind-blowing revelation that has the potential to transform your life. We’re diving into the concept of your personal thermostat, the one that regulates your comfort zone, not your living room. But here’s the catch: it’s time to break free from those self-imposed limits, crank up the heat, and embark on an exhilarating journey of personal transformation—just for you.

I learned recently that there is a thermostat inside your body. No, I don’t mean one that is actually reading the temperature and regulating it, but a metaphorical thermostat that keeps you in your comfort zone. It’s a premise from Ed Mylett, and while I’m sure I’ll get this a little wrong, let me try to explain. Essentially you can make a decision and you turn up the heat. You increase your intensity toward that end but unless you fully buy into it mentally, you’ll eventually turn that thermostat back down to a more comfortable temperature. You aren’t doing it consciously, but you just prefer the more ‘comfortable’ temperature you were at before.

Might as well be firsthand documentation of how I’ve been cooling off lately.

Let’s consider an example, you make a firm decision, like “I’m going to shed those extra 15 pounds by September,” and you go all out for weeks or even months. You’re fired up, making progress, and feeling invincible. But then, something happens. You start to lose headway. You stop doing all the little things that used to give you momentum. Maybe you drink a little more coffee and a little less water in a day. You trade in the intensity of your workout, opting for a walk instead of a run. There seem to be just a few more rich foods around the house that weren’t before.

So, what’s the difference?

Your headspace, that’s the difference. If your mindset didn’t shift, you naturally turn down your internal thermostat, slipping back into old habits. You naturally feel more ‘comfortable’ living at the temp that keeps you 15 lbs heavier so you subconsciously fixed it. This doesn’t even have to be weight; it could be anything you’re trying to change for yourself. The weight creeps back on, your morning routine gets abandoned, and the laundry remains unfolded. It’s like you’ve set your thermostat to keep you comfortable in your old ways.

I get it. I used to resist this idea too. I’d say to myself, “That’s not me! I’m not the one cooling myself off. It’s stress, my crazy full life, or maybe even wonky hormones.” But you know what? I realized that’s exactly what’s been happening. I’ve been finding excuses, reasons to keep turn that thermostat dial (man does that age me, let’s say tap that app) to a level where I’m most comfortable. My personal, internal comfort zone.

How do I get out of the comfort zone and stay out?

I’m realizing now that Mr. Mylett, and Ms. Swift, are right. It’s me, I’m the problem (and you probably are too, sorry to say). Good news though friend, we can take control of your own thermostat. While I’m clearly no expert, I’m taking steps to live into the person that I want to be. The work in progress that I am is finding these three things to be the most helpful.

Embodying the Vision

If we have to be in the right headspace and mentally take on what it means to be the version of us that lives with the heat cranked up, we have to start living like she does. Envision an unstoppable version of yourself, radiating confidence and resilience. Imagine the choices that version of you would make in different situations. When you really want to watch Netflix, ask yourself, what would she do? Grab a snack and head to the couch? Pull out the unfolded laundry and multitask it? Hop on the treadmill with the remote close at hand? By creating a vivid mental picture, you align your actions with the qualities that will propel your personal growth. So, ask yourself, “What would she do?” and let that guide you on your journey.

Live into the Identity; No Apologies Required

Embrace the identity you desire without hesitation. Own it, my friend! Repeat after me, even if you need a little side-eye to do it: “I am awesome at ________.” Insert whatever the identity is that you’re trying to live into. I’m awesome at keeping a tidy home. I am a great distance runner. I’m unbelievably creative and resourceful. Do what makes sense to you but make it a bold statement. Remind yourself of it often, even if you stumble along the way (we all do!). Remember, setbacks are just temporary blips on the path to success. Be kind to yourself, learn from those experiences, and keep pushing forward. You can always remind yourself that you’re still becoming her and she would be so proud of your progress!

Breaking Barriers, Unleashing Your True Potential Outside Your Comfort Zone

OK so this one is going to go next level, and get a little woo woo, are you ready? Close your eyes and envision yourself a year from now, fully embodying the person you aspire to be. Feel the fire burning inside you, the intensity, and the excitement of your personal growth journey. But hold on tight! Let your imagination run wild and envision surpassing your current aspirations. Picture a life where you’ve outgrown her and the current temperature. What does that look like? What does it feel like? Embrace the idea that your potential knows no bounds. It’s time to unlock new heights and unleash your true, untapped potential.

So, my friend, it’s time to ignite your inner dynamo and infuse it with your authentic voice. Embrace the power, passion, and unwavering determination to become the person you’ve always envisioned. Remember, it’s all about channeling her, living into your desired identity, and constantly pushing beyond your comfort zone. If you need a little support getting there, I got you.
